Are you looking to elevate your outdoor living space with a concrete firepit, but feeling unsure about where to start? With so many options in size, shape, and ignition systems, it can be overwhelming to make the right choice. Don’t worry – our experts are here to help!

In this blog post, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about selecting the perfect fire pit, from sizes and shapes to ignition systems. We hope these tips will help you narrow down your options and find the ideal fit for your space.

How to choose

the right size

First thing you need to do is to consider your space. You can measure your outdoor area, make sure that you have enough room for the fire feature and seating while allowing for safe movement around it. Another thing is to leave clearance space. You should maintain at least 3 feet of clearance from structures, furniture and plants for safety.

Seating Arrangement

  • For Small Gatherings (2-4 people): A 24-36 inch fire bowl or table works well for intimate settings.
  • For Medium Groups (4-6 people): Choose a 36-48 inch diameter to provide ample warmth and space for drinks or small plates.
  • For Large Gatherings (6+ people): Opt for a 48+ inch fire table to accommodate more people comfortably.

Height Considerations

  • Low-Profile Fire Bowls (10-16 inches high): Best for lounge seating and a relaxed atmosphere.
  • Dining-Height Fire Tables (24-30 inches high): Suitable for outdoor dining setups.
  • Bar-Height Fire Tables (36+ inches high): Great for standing areas or bar stools.

Considerations

Ignition systems

Manual Lit

Most fire pits are available in manual lit and this option requires the least maintenance; however, keep in mind that depending on the BTU rating of your fire pit you may need to have either a push button or an electronic ignition to meet local codes.

Piezoelectric Ignition

A push-button igniter that generates a small spark when pressed, igniting the gas. It’s simple and reliable but may require manual intervention.

Electronic Ignition

A more advanced system that ignites the gas with a spark automatically when you turn the control knob. It can be more convenient, but it requires electricity or batteries. If you prefer minimal effort, opt for an automatic ignition system, where the spark is generated when you turn on the gas. Manual systems, like piezoelectric igniters, may require more attention but can still be reliable.

Other considerations

Outdoor fire pits are exposed to the elements, so make sure the ignition system is durable, waterproof, and designed for harsh outdoor conditions.
Look for systems specifically designed for outdoor use, ensuring the components (electronic parts, wiring, etc.) are protected from moisture and corrosion. Also, some ignition systems are easy to install yourself, especially if you’re building the fire pit from scratch or as part of an outdoor kitchen. Others may require professional installation, especially more complex systems that integrate with the gas supply.
