Spring Cleaning Your Outdoor Firepit
As the weather warms up and we move towards the long, sunny days of summer, it’s the perfect time to give your outdoor firepit some love. After months of sitting unused through the colder seasons, your firepit might need a little TLC to make sure it’s ready for those cozy evenings and summer get-togethers. Here’s a step-by-step guide to spring cleaning your firepit and making sure it’s in top shape for all your outdoor gatherings.
Why Spring Clean Your Firepit?
Firepits are not just decorative—they’re a gathering spot for family and friends, a place to roast marshmallows, and a source of warmth on cool evenings. But after winter, your firepit may have accumulated ash, dirt, and even rust, which can affect its performance and aesthetics. Spring cleaning ensures that the firepit is safe, functional, and looking its best for those warm, fire-lit nights.
What You’ll Need:
- Work gloves
- Sponge
- A piece of cloth
- Mild dish soap
- Vinegar
- Bucket of water
- Firepit cover (optional but recommended)
- Protective coating (if needed)
Step 1
Remove cover and media
The first thing you need to do is remove the fabric cover and check the unit for grime or mildew if you cover it during winter months. If you do not have a cover, you can remove the media you use for your fire pit, for example, lava rocks, glass beads, etc. This first step would make your cleaning much easier.

Step 2
Scrub the Inside
Once you’ve cleared out the media, it’s time to give the inside of the firepit a good cleaning. It would be better if you vacuum or sweep the plate to remove the broken lava rock pieces and other residue that could block the burner ports.
Then use the sponge soaked in warm water, gently scrub the surface clean. If there is buildup of mildew, grime, or white mineral streaks, you can mix water and vinegar then scrub the area as needed with the sponge.
Wipe the firepit down with a damp cloth and then wipe dry with a clean cloth.
Step 3
Clean the Exterior
While you’re focusing on the inside, don’t forget the outside of the firepit! Dirt, grime, and grease can build up on the exterior over time. A mixture of mild dish soap and water works well for cleaning the outside. Use a damp cloth to wipe the whole surface.

Step 4
Check for Any Damages
Spring cleaning also gives you a chance to inspect the firepit for any damages that might need attention. Check for cracks in the structure, loose parts, or any signs of wear. If you notice anything concerning, it’s best to address it before you start using the firepit regularly.
Step 5
Apply protective coating (optional)
You can finish off the cleaning process with our Refresh Sealer. Wipe it on and then rub it off with a clean dry cloth. Do not let the Refresh Sealer dry on the concrete. We highly recommend to getting our Refresh Sealer for your firepit once a year to apply in the spring because this will not only renew the protective coat on your firepit, reduce the visibility of scratches, but it will also make the firepit look new again.
After that, you can put the lava rock and or other media back on to the burner plate. And you are now ready to enjoy your firepit this summer!
